Day hikes around Shivapuri, Nagarkot or the hills above Pokhara are a wonderful way to exercise a fit adult dog. Check the rules first, because dogs are not permitted in some national parks and conservation areas.
- Build up distance over several weeks.
- Use a harness and keep your dog on a lead near livestock, wildlife and village dogs.
- Carry water and a folding bowl, and offer a drink every 30 minutes.
- Pack tick protection, a small first aid kit and poop bags.
- Check paws for cuts and leeches during monsoon.
Puppies under a year, flat-faced breeds and senior dogs should stick to short, easy walks.
