Adopting a Street Dog in Nepal: A First Week Guide
· 5 min read

Nepali community dogs are hardy, clever and loyal. Here is how to help one settle into home life.
Adopting a local dog gives a home to an animal that needs one, and local dogs are well adapted to Nepal's climate. Whether you adopt from a shelter or take in a pup from your lane, the first week sets the tone.
First, the vet
Book a check-up before or just after bringing the dog home. Your vet will plan vaccination including rabies, deworming and tick treatment, and can estimate age and check for skin problems.
Food and settling in
- Start with small meals of a complete puppy or adult food. A stomach used to scraps needs a gentle change.
- Give a quiet corner with a bed and water, and let the dog come to you.
- Take them to the same toilet spot after every meal and nap, and reward success.
- Introduce a collar first, then a leash indoors, before the first walk.
Be patient
Many rescued dogs are shy for the first few weeks. Routine, gentle handling and rewards build trust faster than anything else.
