Setting Up Your First Aquarium
· 4 min read

Tank, filter, patience. A step-by-step start for beginners.
- Choose a tank of at least 40 litres. Larger tanks are easier to keep stable.
- Rinse gravel and decor, then fill with conditioned water.
- Install the filter and heater and let them run.
- Add a bacteria starter and wait. Cycling the tank takes a few weeks.
- Add a few hardy fish first and increase slowly.
Weekly care
Change 20 to 30 percent of the water each week, wipe algae from the glass and rinse filter sponges in the old tank water.
Power cuts
Short power cuts are rarely a problem. For longer ones a battery air pump keeps oxygen in the water.
